It is my pleasure to invite you to the launch of the first
edition of the HIV booklet from a Christian perspective. Since
2005, the Ethnic Health Foundation (EHF) and the London Ecumenical
AIDS Trust (LEAT) have worked in close partnership as part
of the Christian Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP). In
2007, both organizations teamed up with the SAFER partnership
which provides HIV Prevention services in Lambeth, Southwark
and Lewisham to engage the Christian community.
The current work has been successful. However, one of the
major gaps that have been noted in all the implementation
of the work has been the absence of a resource specific to
Christian communities. Consequently, in 2008, EHF and LEAT
actively engaged Christian communities in developing a resource/booklet
on “HIV from a Christian perspective”.
The development of the resource was participatory in nature,
taking into consideration the contributions of Bishops, Pastors,
other church leaders and indeed colleagues from the statutory
sector.
The launch of “SPEAK OUT, ACT NOW” is expected
to highlight the need to strengthen the capacity of the Christian
community in the fight against HIV & AIDS, stigma and
discrimination through information that is culturally appropriate,
relevant and acceptable to the Christian community.
The booklet will be formally launched by our renowned Public
Health Commissioner in HIV related services – Sukainah
Jauhar.
